Today, NASA’s Messenger spacecraft became the first satellite to transmit images of Mercury’s surface.  The $446 million Messenger reached Mercury’s orbit on March 17th, the planet has an average distance from Earth of 48 million miles.  Over the next three days the spacecraft will send nearly 1,200 photos to NASA and the year long mission will encompass 75,000 photos total.  A press conference is scheduled for later today with the agency.  Hit the jump for the rest of the photos
