>Detroit in Decline

CNN. com reported that Detroit, MI has suffered a 25% loss in population over the course of a decade.  In 2000 the city had 951,270 residents, a figure that dropped to 713,777 in 2010.  To say the least, the city has not been the most appealing place to live.  Cityrating.com has Detroit’s violent crime rate being 3.38 times the national average (source).  Detroit was built on the firm foundation of Henry Ford, but given the performance of the automobile industry the city now encumbers an unemployment rate of 11.7% (source).  Given those figures, is anyone surprised by this population decline?
